Mystery bike

So, the mystery bicycle. Where did that beauty come from?

Before explaining, I'd like to make one point. I believe most people would agree that there are moments of uneasiness in any marriage or relationship. One of mine, thank heavens not very often, is when I gently break the news to my wife that I'm thinking about obtaining a new two-wheeled machine. If there's not too much pushback, it is usually safe to proceed.

It goes without saying, I have such a wonderful partner!

Anyway, yes, I have acquired a new bike and the latest addition to my cycling arsenal is a 2023 Trek Checkpoint SL 5. I've had my eye on this particular model since it was initially launched by the Wisconsin-based company in 2018. When the COVID pandemic arrived, finding a Checkpoint was next to impossible — but that is no longer the case.

It is marketed by Trek as an adventure bicycle, with a gravel-specific setup. While ready for racing, it also comes with tons of mounts for attaching bags for any bikepacking trip. But its versatility doesn't stop there. Cruising on logging roads or bike paths are a breeze, and one could choose to utilize a thinner tire — say 28mm in size — and go road riding all day long.

Simply put, this bike does it all. And on the few occasions when I've been asked to make a recommendation on a possible purchase, most of the time I've steered people toward the Trek Checkpoint.

Here are a few details about my new machine:

— It has a full carbon-fiber frame and fork.

— Its color is radioactive red/nautical navy.

— It sports a Shimano groupset; 11-34 cassette; 11 speed; double chainring, 50/36.

— Equipped with 40mm tires.

— It's all set up for going tubeless, with the sealant even provided. But, so far, I'm not a disciple of such a popular practice, so I've installed tubes.

— It weighs 21.3 pounds.

The list of reasons to justify my purchase of the Trek Checkpoint is more than a mile long, but I did have to make a deal with my wife. Because our basement is crammed full of bikes, bike tires, and bike parts, I agreed to attempt to sell one of my prized possessions. Which will it be, you ask? I've decided to part with my 2020 Trek 920, an adventure bicycle that offers many of the same characteristics as my new beast.

As most regular readers of my blog have probably surmised by now, I have an obsession when it comes to keeping my bikes nice. So, the one up for grabs is in excellent condition. Stay safe, and here's hoping the nice weather arrives soon ... so I can check out my Checkpoint.

FOR SALE: My 2020 Trek 920 ... minus the panniers.
